We will visit the KWV Wine Emporium, for a wine- or chocolate and brandy tasting, and an opportunity to purchase some of the wines produced in the district.
Franschhoek has earned a reputation as the food and wine capital of the country, with 8 of the top 100 restaurants located in the valley. The heritage of the French Huguenots is reflected in the distinct French flavour of the area – in the names of the establishments and the general feel of the town. Enjoy a wine tasting and a cellar tour at a Franschhoek vineyard.
The historic town of Stellenbosch is situated in the heart of South Africa’s winelands. It is the second oldest town in South Africa. The Stellenbosch Wine Route is arguably the country’s most famous. More than 100 of the over 300 cellars are open to the public for a wine tasting.
Day 4: Cultural Cape Town (half-day)
What to see/do/experience:
The District Six-museum documents the lost community of District Six, once a vibrant multiracial community that was relocated to outlying townships under the apartheid laws. The entire neighbourhood was bulldozed in 1966 except for some religious buildings.
Bo-Kaap:
When slavery at the Cape ended in 1838 the Cape’s Muslim community settled at the Bo-Kaap Malay Quarter on the slopes of Signal Hill. The narrow cobbled streets are lined with neat rows of colourful Cape cottages.
Cape Town is surrounded by a variety of townships and informal settlements. Notably, Langa is the oldest township in South Africa (75 years old), and Khayelitsha is the second. Meet local communities and experience township culture, a mix between traditional African and urban culture. Visit an informal spaza shop, a shebeen (pub) and hostels. Buy some unique keepsakes at an African craft centre.
